The Highs and Lows

Picked up my new board today from work, and despite the wave only being somewhere between waist and shoulder high, caught some lovely little rides in the fading light. The board as pictured was a general workhorse that Tris also shaped an identical one for himself, so it was with horror when I paddled round an oncoming surfer and our boards collided. Sadly his fin slashed clean through the nose but fortunately as the board was made from Biofoam, I carried on surfing without the threat of any water retension. I think to not end my session was a real bonus, and much easier to assign no blame. In fact, Chris was a real gentleman which made it much easier to smile and chalk it up to experience.
However it just goes to show, that no matter who is to blame, sometimes it's better to turn the other cheek. Otherwise stories like the attached link, could ruin a great sport.

Just Listen

Sat in the airport, facing yet further delays and it all feels a bit gloomy. So just by a chance inspiration with some clever technology I write to share this you. Turn up the volume and enjoy this little ray of sunshine.

Skatan

There is nothing quite like skating miles and miles of mirror flat concrete with not a soul around. Flights are back on for Friday so hopefully back soon.

Cocoa Beach

Never really thought about surfing here before, but despite it being small and onshore it was so warm and nice to bodysurf. Heading back tomorrow and may have to rent a board.

Powell Peralta

with my 38th birthday looming, my wife treated me to a 'new old' skateboard. The guys at Powell Peralta have been reissuing boards from the late 70's and 80's, so today I am the proud owner of a Sword and Skull. Ron Jon Surf shop legend - Roger had over 50 years skating experience in and around Cocoa beach, and I watched on as he meticulously gripped and put together the new board. All that is required now, is that I go to the local drainage ditch that I see on my run every morning, and try to forget that I am scarily close to 40.

Need some wind...

I have been getting the odd email and report that neither wind nor swell is working. Now usually I would sit back and relax and think that I wasn't missing anything. However its clear that the high that the UK is enjoying is actually keeping the volcanic ash in place. No clear sign of when we will return, but as the backlog grows, it looks more likely to be into middle next week now. Praying for some good old westerly winds very soon.

Laying Low

Have had to swap the surfboard for an inflatable gator over the past couple of weeks, as floating aimlessly around a pool, literally hiking miles around Disneyworld and the odd early morning run has been my only outlet for exercise. Whilst its been a 'fun family' trip, I was really looking forward to flying home today and catching up with my beloved North Devon. So its with great dismay that I write to say the blog will have to wait a few more days as we sit out the whole Iceland Volcano scenario, and instead I will share a new CD; The Silversun pickups - enjoy.
